Also known as the “Flower of the Holy Night” and “Flame Leaf,” the brilliant red poinsettia is one of the most popular flowers in Mexico, which is where legend associates the plant with Christmas. Mexican lore states that two poor children, having nothing to offer the Christ Child for the annual nativity, picked some weeds from the roadside. Those weeds flowered into brilliant poinsettias when placed on the church’s manger scene that night, the legend states.
