Ware Shoals scored their first two touchdowns on Whitmire interceptions to take an early 16-0 lead. Whitmire’s opponent then built a 30-0 halftime lead with a blocked punt and good field position.
Whitmire moved the ball into Hornet territory several times, but could not muster a score.
“Our great week of practice did not translate into good play on the field,” said Whitmire Assistant Coach Chris Martin.
Ware Shoals moves on to face number-three seed Christ Church in the second round. Whitmire finished its season Friday 3-8.
“This season started with a lot of promise. Injuries and other events have taken a toll on the team,” said Martin.
“We are proud of the way the players kept fighting and made a way into the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. Our returners know that they must get stronger to compete at the varsity level.”
Whitmire senior players had fine careers, said Martin and were the most successful group of senior in terms of wins since the early 1980s.
“This season was not how they wanted to go out, but they will hold their heads high and each will represent WHS in other sports this school year,” said Martin. “We thank them for their hard work and leadership.”
