Two men are in custody after a chase Monday afternoon.
Newberry police were called to the parking lot in front of Fred’s on Wilson Road due to someone trying to sell a chainsaw.
Police were checking the two men’s identification and vehicle tags when they fled from offices.
Newberry police chased the two along Wilson Road, across College Street and into Hawkins Trailer Park when the getaway truck went into a person’s backyard and got stuck.
The two men then took to their feet in their race from the officers. Officers from the Newberry Police Department, Sheriff’s Office and Highway Patrol converged on the area, and heavily patrolled the area around Highway 76, Civitan and Airport roads during the search for the two.
The S.C. Law Enforcement Division (SLED) bloodhound team was called to the scene, and the two men were both found around 5 p.m. Monday.
Newberry Police Chief Jackie Swindler says that the truck the men were traveling in was stolen and both men were wanted in a couple of other Midlands counties.
Ernest Leverne Bolin, 48, Leesville, and Ernest Dwight Knowles II, 40, of Gloverville, were both arrested and charged with criminal conspiracy. Knowles was also charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and Bolin with giving false information to officer.
