Newberry College running back S.J. Worrell and linebacker Andre Moyd have been named the South Atlantic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, the league office announced today. Lenoir-Rhyne wide receiver Artis Gilmore was named the SAC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Worrell, a senior from Madison, Ga. (Presbyterian College/Morgan Co. High School) had a career day when he rushed for 237 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries in the 40-21 road win over Catawba.

Catawba had allowed an average of only 198.25 yards per game in total offense going into that game. Worrell averaged 12.5 yards per carry. He had long carries of 24, 13, 37, 22 and 61 yards. The 61-yard touchdown run in the third quarter is the longest play of the season for Newberry so far.

The 237 yards is the second-most in a single game in Newberry history, only behind Alex Haynes’ 255 yards against Bowie State in 2007.

Worrell has 387 yards and four touchdowns on 56 carries, with 6.9 yards per carry this year.

Moyd, a senior outside linebacker from Andrews (Andrews High School) was Newberry’s leading defensive player in the 40-21 road win over Catawba. Moyd made seven total tackles, including two solo sacks for a loss of 21 yards and three tackles for loss for a loss of 25 yards. He also forced a fumble, which he recovered, and recorded a quarterback hurry. For the season, Moyd is Newberry’s second leading tackler with 27 total tackles. He has recovered two fumbles, forced one, made 3.5 tackles for loss and the two sacks from the Catawba game. This is Moyd’s second career SAC Defensive Player of the Week honor. He also earned the award on October 29, 2007, after returning an interception 92 yards for the game-winning touchdown against Tusculum.

Gilmore, a freshman from Asheville, N.C. (T.C. Roberson High School) returned the opening kickoff of the second half 89 yards for a score in Lenoir-Rhyne’s 38-17 win over Tusculum Saturday night in Greeneville, Tenn. Gilmore totaled 138 yards on two kickoffs (69-yard average) against the Pioneers and became the second L-R player to return a kickoff for a score in 2009. Jamont Jones did it against Concord on Sept. 5.

Newberry returns to action this Saturday for Homecoming against Mars Hill. Kickoff at Setzler Field is set for 7 p.m. Call (803) 321-5101 or email tickets@newberry.edu for ticket information.
