A day after the grand opening of the Ballentine Farm Museum at the fair grounds tomorrow, Newberry’s Gordon Leslie, 85, will speak at the Newberry County Historical and Museum Society’s third quarter meeting. Leslie will share firsthand his experiences in World War II while serving in the Navy in the Pacific Theater aboard the U.S.S. Whitehurst.
“He’s just so interesting,” said Connie Rinehart, publicity chairman of the society.
Leslie is not only a WWII history buff, but a local Newberry history expert as well, she says.
His family has been in the area for three or four generations, said Rinehart.
“He knows Newberry as it was,” she says.
“Leslie is one of Newberry’s greatest treasures in his knowledge of World War II and also local Newberry history, having recently been honored by the University of South Carolina for his contributions of memorabilia on Newberry’s history,” said Rinehart. “Members will not want to miss this presentation.”
The society welcomes new members and would be honored by the presence of other WW II veterans who might like to attend, said Rinehart.
The meeting begins at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Newberry College Music Hall.
