For the mayor’s spot, incumbent mayor Larry Spotts and current councilman Derek Underwood will be facing off.
Underwood’s spot, along with that of Allen Gallman Jr. are the two town council seats coming open. Prosperity’s council members are elected “at-large” with no districts.
Winners in this at-large system are the candidates who receive the top numbers of votes, as long as a plurality (or base percentage) of the votes cast is met by all the winners. In the event that a plurality of votes in not achieved for all three council seats, a runoff election would be held Nov. 17.
With such a large field of candidates, a run off election is a very real possibility.
The six candidates for town council are: incumbent Allen Gallman Jr.; Bruce A. Connelly, former mayor; Catherine Eldridge, a near winner in Prosperity’s 2007 town council election; Mike Hawkins, former county councilman; Robert H. Martin Jr., real estate agent; and Andy Stout, a dispatcher for Newberry County’s emergency services.
The polling place for the Nov. 3 will be Prosperity Civic Center at 250 School Drive. This is a permanent change from the former polling location for town residents at 118 McNeary St., the Prosperity Fire Station. The town has approximately 700 registered voters.
