An autopsy is being done this morning to help in determining the cause of last night’s fatal wreck on the interstate.

Around 7:17 p.m. yesterday, Roger S. Watkins, 69, of Greenville, was driving in the eastbound lane of I-26 when he ran off the right side of the road about a quarter-of-a-mile west of the Highway 202 Little Mountain exit. After running off the road, Watkins struck a tree near the 84-mile marker.

Coroner Craig Newton said Watkins ran off the road for “unknown reasons.”

Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene, and no other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

The cause of the death and wreck are under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol and Coroner’s Office.
