Area residents and town officials had repeatedly requested cross arms at the McNeary Street, or Highway 391, tracks, a crossing that has proved prone to wrecks.
The most recent collision was in March when a train hit a log truck, scattering logs throughout the area, and knocking down the progress that had been made to install crossing arms.
More than a year ago, CSX set posts to install crossing arms at the crossing, but, according to Mayor Larry Spotts, never finished the job.
The March wreck between the log truck and train damaged the polls.
Now, there are three new arms at the tracks—one on each side of the tracks and one on the road leading to the rescue squad and fire department. Fire Chief Mark Bowers says the emergency responders will not be hampered by the crossing arms.
“In the last year-and-a-half we have had several wrecks there and a train derailment on the same line,” said Spotts.
Town officials are hoping the newly-installed crossing arms will prevent future wrecks at the crossing.
Despite the numerous wrecks at the crossing in recent years there have been no fatalities.
