A Fourth of July party in Mountville ended with gunshots instead of fireworks on Saturday.
Around 50 people were at the party on Mountville Road in Mountville, which is just across the Laurens County line between Cross Hill and Clinton.
When deputies arrived they found a 28-year-old Mountville man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the back.
Witnesses gave a description of the vehicle driven by the shooter, a short time later the suspect was spotted on Highway 72 going into Clinton and stopped by Laurens County deputies.
James Bernard Darby, 23, of 561 Green Meadows, Newberry, was arrested and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill in the shooting.
Sheriff Lee Foster says Newberry County has a bench warrant on Darby on a charge where he ran from an officer during a traffic stop by Prosperity police. Drugs and weapons were found in Darby’s car during the stop.
Foster says Darby is also a suspect in a shooting in Fairfield County.
“He has a history of weapons violations in the city and the county,“ said Foster.
Once released from the Johnson Detention Center in Laurens County, Darby will be returned to Newberry County to face charges.
