“Grow Newberry Main Street Farmers Market” will open Saturday at 9 a.m. The festival-like market will be open every Saturday, except July 4, until Aug. 9.
The hours of the market will be from 9-11 a.m., or until vendors sell out.
The Master Gardeners, City of Newberry and Downtown Merchants Association are teaming up to produce the annual market.
Once again, the market will feature locally-grown veggies and fruits from backyard gardeners. Also available will be soaps, jams and jellies and plants. All prepared food products and eggs must be prepared in compliance with Department of Health regulations.
This week’s harvest is expected to include squash, cucumbers, and maybe early tomatoes.
Other vendors will have handmade baskets, soap and jams, jellies and salsas.
Also, each Saturday a non-profit group will be allowed to host a bake sale as a fundraiser. Non-profits can call Elizabeth Hipp at Elizabeth’s on Main at 405-1110 to reserve a Saturday bake sale slot. This week’s non-profit group will be the Historical Society and the money raised will benefit the new Farm Museum.
The Master Gardeners will have a booth set up each week which members will staff and answer gardening questions.
Market manager Richard Youngblood adds that downtown stores will be open for business for those that wish to continue shopping after hitting the farmers market.
