A man cutting grass died this afternoon after being struck by a vehicle at the I-26 eastbound rest area near Jalapa.

Calvin Adams, 46, of Chester, was employed by Chester Turf and Landscaping and was cutting grass off the roadway at the rest area, according to Coroner Craig Newton.

While Adams was cutting the grass, a motorist went off the roadway and hit Adams around 11:48 a.m.

Adams died at Newberry County Memorial Hospital at 12:26 this afternoon, according to Newton.

An autopsy revealed Adams died due to blunt force trauma to the head and neck.

Details of the wreck are not available from the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Earlier today a person was airlifted from the rest area when a car flipped in the median near the 61-mile marker.

My heart goes out to the Adams and Hardin family of Chester. Calvin's daughter was a member of my Girl Scout troop. I pray that his wife and family find comfort during their time of sorrow.
