Saturday at 11:25 p.m., deputies with the Sheriff’s Office were called to 1664 Bachman Chapel Road in Prosperity to check on the welfare of several children because of a medical condition of one of the children, said Sheriff Lee Foster.
“When the deputies arrived at the residence, they heard someone running inside the residence and were able to see in plain view a marijuana plant growing at the residence. The officers also observed a partially smoked marijuana cigarette on the porch of the residence,“ describes Foster.
Foster says deputies found two of the three arrested people hiding upon entering the home, one in a kitchen cabinet and another in a closet.
A narcotics officer and K-9 unit were called in and
the drug sniffing dog unit located in excess of an ounce of marijuana divided into small plastic baggies. Deputies also found several items of drug paraphernalia.
“The deputies also found three small children, ages 3 and under, inside the residence,“ said Foster “All of the children were asleep at the time of the incident.“
Deputies notified the Department of Social Services which took charge of the three children.
Courtney M. Chavis, 21, and Fred Sexton III, 29, both of 1664 Bachman Chapel Road, Prosperity, and Jordon Ethan Manning, 19, of 4229 Highway 391, Prosperity, were all arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
Foster says more charges will be filed against the suspects involving reckless endangerment of the children. Sheriff’s Office investigators are working with both the Department of Social Services and the solicitor to determine the appropriate charges concerning the children.
All three of the adults were taken to the Newberry County Detention Center where they were released by a Newberry County Magistrate on $1,000 personal appearance bonds, which means they were not required to post money or surety to be released from jail.
