The Town of Prosperity has done some shuffling on its 2009-2010 budget. The result is no tax increases, but residents will see a boost in some utility rates.

The water and electric rates will increase by 6 percent for Prosperity customers. This equals $6 on a $100 bill. However, there will be no increase in sewer costs.

The increases are pass-along costs from increases to what the town is paying Duke Power and Newberry County Water and Sewer for the utilities.

In the budget, the salaries of three councilmen and a few employees were switched to the utility portion of the budget in order to balance the total ledger.

The 14 town employees will all get small varying raises. Some raises will be to bring several employees up to the increased minimum wage, other employees will see raises due to increased certifications, while other paychecks will reflect a small cost of living increase.

The mayor and council will not receive an increase in salary.

The budget to run the town is $455,800, an increase of $41,500 from last year. The utility budget is $1.69 million. Last year’s budget was $1.64 million.

The first of two readings to approve the financial plan will occur at a special called meeting on June 8 at 6:30 p.m.
