A Newberry man was arrested in Michigan on April 2 on charges he killed a 19-year-old in Union County on Aug. 18.

Derrick “Black Jesus” Ruff, 28, of 52 Mason Road, Newberry, has been charged by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and first degree burglary in the home invasion and killing of Kelvin Davis of Union.

After an extensive search last summer, which included Newberry County, Ruff was arrested in Wayne County, Mich. after being caught in a marijuana bust.

During the bust, Michigan officers ran his named in national crime computers and learned about the murder charges against him.

Ruff waived extradition and was returned to Union County on Thursday.

Patrick Troy Rice, 25, of 617 Evans St., Whitmire, was also charged with murder, armed robbery, two counts of kidnapping and first degree burglary in the case.

The men are charged with breaking into a house, tying up a woman, demanding money and shooting Davis.
