The Bulldogs defeated Mid-Carolina in a shootout 3-2 in a continuation of an overtime session that was postponed because of storms several weeks ago.
Newberry followed that victory with a 3-1 triumph at Lon Armstrong Stadium.
Newberry goalkeeper Aaron Ransdell made a couple of key saves in the shootout session and Michael Roberts banged in the game-winner to lift the Bulldogs to the win.
Jairo Samayoa and Woody Binnicker also scored in the shootout.
The Bulldogs carried the momentum of the shootout victory into the second game. Samayoa gave the ‘Dogs a lead in the fourth minute when he buried a shot into the back of the net after an assist from Roberts.
The ‘Dogs took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but were forced to play a man down after Alfonzo Luviano was given a red card for, what coach C.C. Cromer described as “offensive language.”
The Rebels tied the game 1-1 when a Bulldog player redirected the ball into the goal.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good in the 65th minute when T.K. Purcell scored off an assist from Roberts. Roberts capped off the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 72nd minute.
Ransdell racked up six saves in the game, including one on a penalty kick in the 69th minute.
NHS soccer falls to Ninety Six, 5-4
The Newberry High School soccer team dropped a heartbreaker, 5-4, at Ninety Six Tuesday.
Wesley Lewis scored in the final minute to give the Wildcats the victory and himself a hat trick.
Newberry roared back from a 3-1 halftime deficit to score the next three goals in the game. Roberts scored from 21-yards away and was followed eight minutes later by a blast from T.K. Purcell. Purcell also scored in the first half.
The ‘Dogs took the lead in the 69th minute buried left-footed shot just inside the goal.
The Wildcats scored twice in the final 10 minutes to escape with the win.
Upper State track meet set for tomorrow
Track teams from Mid-Carolina and Newberry high schools will compete in the 2-A Upper State track meet tomorrow at Broome High School.
The Mid-Carolina girls’ track team won the Region III-2A meet last week and won several individual events, including three by Randreika Richardson.
The Newberry boys’ team finished second overall, followed closely by the Rebels. Saturday’s meet will feature another showdown between defending 800-meter state champion Jatavius Boyd and Region III-2A champion Miles Wilson, both from Newberry.
M-C sprinter Clarence Turner will also look to continue his outstanding season when he competes in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash.
