WANTED - Bookman
Three men believed to be at the center of a burglary and assault are all now behind bars.
Lavar Johnson, 25, of Porter Road, was arrested by Conway police on a weapons charge and returned to Newberry yesterday.
Just after 3 p.m. yesterday, James Pitts, 25, of Palmetto Pointe Apartments, Newberry, and James Bookman, 27, turned themselves into the county jail after notices for their arrests were sent out to police and news stations around the state.
The three allegedly broke into a Nance Street apartment Thursday and assaulted a man.
The men are accused of pointing guns at several people in the apartment, including a small child, and assaulting a man at the residence.
The victim of the assault sustained minor injuries and did not require medical attention, according to Newberry Police Investigator Kevin Atkins.
All three men have been charged with first degree burglary, second degree lynching, possession of a pistol during the commission of a violent crime and three counts of pointing and presenting a firearm.
Since the charge of first-degree burglary can carry a life sentence, their bond hearings will be held by a circuit court judge.
Police believe a shot fired on Porter Road and vandalism may be connected to the break-in.
Friday, a shot was fired into Johnson’s bedroom and the windshield of his car was smashed.
The bullet hit his mother in the head, but she escaped with minor injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office and Newberry police are working to determine if the two incidents are related and if the shooting was in retaliation or a random act.
So far there are no suspects in the shooting.
