The Observer has just learned that all Newberry County School District activities have been canceled for the weekend, including playoff baseball and softball games because of concerns about swine flu. That includes the postponement of Mid-Carolina's softball game at Palmetto and the Whitmire softball team's game at Fox Creek, both scheduled for tomorrow.

The Mid-Carolina baseball team was scheduled to play Lee Central in its first game in District III-2A action yesterday, but the game was postponed, despite being moved from Prosperity to Richland Northeast High School in Columbia. The second game was slated for tomorrow.

According to Mid-Carolina High School athletic director and interim baseball coach Louie Alexander, this does not mean that any athletic teams will have to forfeit playoff games. According to Alexander, the district is hopeful to have games rescheduled for early next week.
