This morning, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised the total of confirmed Swine flu virus cases to 109 nationwide, up from 91 yesterday, including in that total 10 confirmed South Carolina cases and one Texas death.

In response to the "intensifying outbreak" in the United States and world wide, the World Health Organization raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 5, which is a “strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.”

The federal government declared a public health emergency in the United States and has begun developing a vaccine against the new virus.
