A Newberry man was killed after not stopping for a traffic checkpoint in Richland County Friday evening.

The S.C. Highway Patrol had set up a license check near the intersection of I-126 and Greystone Boulevard.

John White Jr. 21, of Newberry, was traveling near the checkpoint and was clocked traveling at 100 mph around 7:30 p.m.

As troopers began to chase him he crossed over three lanes and at the 101-mile marker on I-126 hit a Subaru Legacy station wagon.

According to reports, White started running from the wreck but later died of injuries sustained in the crash.

Also, a dog traveling in the station wagon died in the wreck.

Due the Highway Patrol being involved in the chase, the wreck is under investigation by the Richland County Sheriff’s Office.
