Wet weather forces postponement of several events

Early morning and afternoon rain forced the postponement of several games in the county last night.

The Newberry High baseball and softball teams postponed games against Gilbert last night.

The Bulldog baseball team will host the reigning 2-A state champions tonight at 6 p.m. Gilbert enters tonight’s contest a game behind Region III-2A leader Mid-Carolina in the league standings. The Indians are currently ranked fifth in 2-A in the latest South Carolina Baseball Coaches Associations poll. Newberry is looking for its first region victory of the season.

The Newberry softball team will have to wait before challenging Gilbert. The Bulldogs will travel to Strom Thurmond tonight as makeup for another rainout game.

Mid-Carolina’s baseball and softball games against Saluda were also rained out. The Rebels’ baseball team will begin a three-games in three-day run tonight when it hosts Saluda tonight. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

The Rebels have opened the season 12-0 and are currently ranked second in 2-A in the latest SCBCA poll.

The Tigers are trying to hold on to fourth place in the region.

Mid-Carolina will host in-county foe Whitmire tomorrow at 7 p.m. and will wrap up its week with a huge Region III-2A showdown against Gilbert.

A victory for the Rebels against the Indians would give them a two-game lead in the region heading into the final week of the regular season.

The Rebels’ softball game against Saluda scheduled for last night appears to be on for tonight. A final decision about the rescheduling has not been made as of press time, but the teams have preliminarily agreed to play tonight.

Saluda and Mid-Carolina are currently tied for second place in Region III-2A with 4-2 league records.

Both have scheduled games with league-leader Gilbert to close the regular season.

The Indians, in their first year in Region III-2A, have opened league play 5-0.

Newberry and Mid-Carolina will face each other in golf, track and tennis tomorrow.

 

Newberry College baseball at Augusta State pushed to Wednesday

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The non-conference baseball game scheduled for yesterday between Newberry College and Augusta State University has been pushed back to today.

First pitch at Jaguar Field on the ASU campus is set for 3 p.m.

The two teams met earlier this season at the Smith Road Complex in Newberry.

Newberry won that matchup, 5-4, on April 1. Newberry's next home games come on Friday and Saturday as the Scarlet and Gray host Lincoln Memorial University for the final South Atlantic Conference series of the season.

NC tennis matches postponed in progress

The Newberry College tennis teams postponed their matches against Catawba, which were already in progress. Both matches will restart this Sunday at 2 pm.

Before the rain began to fall, the men's team (4-7, 3-2 in the SAC) led after doubles action, 2-1.

The ladies (0-10, 0-5 in the SAC) were swept in doubles play and now trail, 0-3.

Before the Catawba match wraps up, both teams will compete in road matches against Lincoln Memorial today at 2 p.m.

Newberry will return home to play Lenoir-Rhyne this Friday at 2 p.m.
