The scarlet and gray now stand at 25-12 on the season after suffering their first conference series loss of the season. Picking up the losses for Newberry were Kristen Hicks (Bamberg) and Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, Fla.).

Newberry responded with two straight singles in the fifth inning by Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris.) and Whitney Wiles (Iva, but three straight popups stranded the runners and the Eagles added one more run in the bottom of the fifth.
NC was able to get on the board in the seventh inning as Huckestein led off with a single to centerfield. After two outs, Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) pinch-hit and doubled to left-center scoring Huckestein. However, Carson-Newman’s Stephanie Templeton was able to get one more out to secure the victory for the Eagles.
Hicks dropped to 10-8 on the year with the loss as she pitched four innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits before Huckestein came in as a relief pitcher in the fifth. Templeton garnered the victory for C-N and improved to 5-1 on the year.
Wiles and Huckestein led Newberry in hitting in game one as the duo both went 2-for-3.
Game Two: Carson-Newman 7, Newberry 2
Newberry was unable to take game two from the Eagles and failed to win a share of a conference series for the first time this season. Carson-Newman’s big fourth inning was the key for the Eagles’ victory as they exploded for four runs to take a 5-0 lead.
With two runs already on the board and the bases loaded, Howar doubled to left-center, clearing the bases and giving the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
Newberry responded in the following half-inning with two consecutive hits by Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) and Christine Stokes (Charleston), but was unable to convert on the hits with the bases loaded after Jessica Reid (Walhalla) was hit by a pitch.
With no outs in the inning, NC stranded all three runners as Templeton came in for relief for starting pitcher, Mary Shealy. Templeton got Hilbourn to lineout to the shortstop and then struck out Angela Cataldo (Sumter.) and ended the inning with an Aissa Gatewood (N. Charleston) groundout to the shortstop.
After Carson-Newman scored two more runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead, Newberry answered with two runs in the sixth inning to cut the advantage to 7-2. Wiles led off the inning with a single to leftfield and then advanced to third with Huckestein’s double to centerfield. Stokes scored Wiles and Huckestein with her single to leftfield.

NC returns to action today as it takes on Lincoln Memorial at 2 p.m.
Newberry baseball splits weekend pair with No. 10 Tusculum
The Newberry College baseball team earned a split of two South Atlantic Conference games with No. 10 Tusculum College at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday. Tusculum won Friday’s suspended game, 4-2, before Newberry won Saturday’s game by a 5-2 count.
Newberry moves to 16-18 overall and 9-9 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Tusculum is now 28-12 overall and 15-2 in the SAC. Newberry takes on Augusta State on the road in non-conference action at 3 p.m. tomorrow before returning home to host Lincoln Memorial in a three-game SAC series on Friday and Saturday at Smith Road.
Friday’s Game: No. 10 Tusculum 4, Newberry 2
Tusculum put up three runs Friday night before the game was suspended due to heavy rains in the bottom of the sixth, and held off a Newberry charge to get the 4-2 win. C.J. Hillyer (Abington, Mass.) scattered four hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win for Tusculum. His season record is now 6-1.
The Pioneers took the lead in the top of the first inning on RBI hits from Jared Richmond (Fort Smith, Ark.) and Paul Finger (Lincolnton, N.C.). Sean Finucane (Cortland, N.Y.) pushed the lead to 3-0 with an RBI-double down the right field line in the top of the fifth. Newberry stranded runners on third base in the fourth and fifth innings, but could not convert on those opportunities. Play was halted on Friday night when the storms rolled in with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Chauncey Mattei (Greenville) was effective for Newberry on the mound, giving up three runs — all earned, and striking out three while scattering 10 hits in six innings.
Newberry got on the board in the seventh inning Saturday afternoon, cutting the deficit to a single run. Consecutive singles from John Kirkland (Orlando, Fla.) and Hunter Wynn (Vero Beach, Fla.) to start the inning put runners on the corners with no outs. Edmund Gravely (Rocky Mount, N.C.) plated the first run with a groundout to second base and a single to right field from Phillip Bartz (LaCrescent, Minn.) made it a 3-2 game. However, TC pitcher Rob Currie (St. Charles, Ill.) induced a pop-out double play to halt Newberry’s threat.
Saturday’s Game: Newberry 5, No. 10 Tusculum 2
A three-run sixth inning gave Newberry its first lead of the series and Thomas Berryhill (Aynor) hit his first homerun of the season to help Newberry split the series against the 10th-ranked team in the nation. Josh McElwee (Andrews) struck out six and allowed six hits in six innings, allowing only one run on the way to the win, moving his record to 5-1. That one run came on a towering homerun to right-center from Grabowski with two outs in the third to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
Newberry tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Zach Upton (Clearwater, Fla.) hit a clutch two-out RBI-single to right field.
Newberry surged ahead with four consecutive base hits in the bottom of the sixth.
Ernest Castellano (Homestead, Fla.) retired the side in order in the top of the eighth and Berryhill allowed only one baserunner in the ninth to pick up his seventh save of the year.
