The Mid-Carolina High School baseball team improved to 6-0 in Region III-2A play by hammering Strom Thurmond 12-2 in six innings Friday at home.
The Rebels led 1-0 after two innings, but pulled away in the middle innings.
C.J. Edwards picked up the victory, his third in region play and second of the week. Edwards tossed a complete-game shutout in a 5-0 win against Batesburg-Leesville on Monday.
The Rebels will face Union County in a home-and-home set beginning today at home. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
The Yellow Jackets will host Mid-Carolina tomorrow at 7 p.m.
M-C softball pounds Rebels, 12-2
The Mid-Carolina High School softball team kept pace in a crowded Region III-2A race by knocking off Strom Thurmond 12-2 Friday on the road.
The victory improves the Rebels’ record to 4-2 in the region. Mid-Carolina has won three league games in a row.
The Rebels will venture out of the league tonight when they travel to King Academy. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
NA splits pair at King tournament
The Newberry Academy softball split a pair of games this weekend in the King Academy Tournament.
The Eagles shook off a slow start before pounding Hammond 14-2, and were defeated by King Academy 10-2.
Hammond and Newberry Academy were scoreless until the Eagles put up four runs in the fifth inning.
The Seahawks got a run back in the bottom of the innings, but the Eagles put the game away with 10 runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Newberry Academy had four players with three hits, led by Noel Franklin. Franklin had three doubles, scored three times and drove in four.
Jessica Cole was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and four RBIs.
Marina Miller doubled twice and drove in three runs, while Ashley Chaffee finished 3-for-5 and scored three times.
Erica Deskins finished 1-for-2, while Ashley Dominick chipped in an RBI in the seventh inning.
Cole was dominant inside the circle for the Eagles. She struck out 13 while surrendering just one hit. Neither of the Seahawks’ runs were earned. King Academy used several Newberry Academy errors to post a comfortable win. Only five of the Knights’ 10 runs were earned. Franklin was 2-for-4, including an RBI double in the fifth inning. Chaffee finished the game 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double.
Cole, Christen Chapman, Ashley Dominick, and Deskins had hits in the game.
The Eagles will get a break before returning to action Wednesday, April 15 at home against King Academy. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
Local hoopsters finish second in tourney
The D-Brown All-Stars, a local youth basketball team, recently finished second in the Spartanburg Invitational at Dorman High School.
The All-Stars cruised through pool play with a perfect 3-0 record before falling to the DeKalb Heat in the tournament’s championship game, 60-59 in overtime.
According to coach Greg Stewart, “The All-Stars received some great play from Steven Young, T.J. Boulware and Jamal Robateau, as well as solid performances from the rest of the team.”
