A Newberry teen has been charged with armed robbery after a game of cards went awry and shots were fired Thursday in the West End area of Newberry. Four others have also been dealt charges.
Eric Rashun Jones, 17, of 1912 Laurel St., Newberry was arrested and charged with armed robbery, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, possession of a weapon by a person under the age of 18 and disorderly conduct.
Keevis Price, 19, of 16 Kookie Lane, Newberry, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and assault and battery.
A 28-year-old and two 19-year-olds were all given tickets for disorderly conduct.
The group reports playing cards at a house on Highway 34, then venturing to the West End area of the city Thursday.
At first, police were told Jones had won the card game and upset others in the group, according to Newberry Police Captain Chuck Counts. Then, Counts said the story changed and he was told that Jones, who turned 17 on March 20, lost the game and robbed another teen to get his money back.
During the robbery, Price allegedly punched another teen.
Counts adds the investigation revealed four carloads of people were shooting at each other near Wright and Academy streets.
“No one knows who was doing the shooting,“ said Counts, adding that no people or property were injured in the shooting.
Jones was released from jail after posting a $50,000 bond.
