The state has reduced the salaries of auditors and treasurers in the state by $2,800 each in a yearly cut of 14.47 percent. The budget item has been changed on the state level to restore the funding on July 1.
But for retiring Auditor Nancy Owen and Treasurer Judy Floyd, the cut could have an impact on their retirement pensions.
The state calculates retirements on the salaries earned in the last quarters the person worked. The cut would lower the two retirees’ income permanently.
In the budget for the 2008-2009 year, the auditor was to be paid $77,932 and the treasurer position $76,569.
Both elected officials are asking County Council to allow them to use funds that will not be used by the end of the budget year, June 30, to make up the difference in their salaries.
The state also pays $1,575 annually to other elected officials such as clerks of court and sheriffs, but these salary benefits had already been moved to protected areas before state budget cuts were made.
Council will be voting on the issue in an upcoming session.
