WHITMIRE — Ten Whitmire Community School fourth-graders and fifth-graders competed in the first Newberry County School District Math Challenge hosted at Newberry Elementary School on March 9.

The team consisted of fifth-graders Cassidy Clark, Imani Hopkins, Amaya Patterson, Wyatt Crase and Jacqueline Riser. The fourth-grade team was Marissa Baker, Kade Proctor, Barrett Martin, Julianne Whisenant and Alexus Sanders.

The math teams from each school in the district participated in two separate events, the individual and the group. During the individual event, math problems were presented in writing. Students worked the problem and then displayed their answers on their white board.

Each student had four tickets and if they answered the problem wrong, they lost a ticket. The challenge continued until there was only one student with tickets left.

During the group event, each grade level team answered a question cooperatively. They followed a rubric which encouraged a team member to be the reader of the question, the moderator, the recorder, and for a member to then present the recorded answer to a group of judges. Points for this event were given based on a rubric.

Planning and practice with the math team started very early on. Fourth-grade teachers Sabrina Martin and Lana Geren and fifth-grade teachers Sarah Lee and Nicole Adams along with Lindsey Folk met to discuss how they were going to help the math team students to be successful. T

hey scheduled and arranged math team practices on Mondays and early release days. During those practices, students were given sample problems like they would see the day of the challenge. They were thrilled with the effort and commitment that each student gave to practices to prepare.

The math team students designed their own T-shirts worn the day of the math challenge. They also designed the WCS banner to be displayed above our section of parents, teachers, and fans. The students were dedicated to making WCS proud on Saturday.

Each student put forth their very best effort in each event. The fourth grade team won the group event for the overall district. The WCS math team members are true Wolverines calculating success, which is the slogan the math team students created to display on the school banner.
