PROSPERITY — Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Glasgow Bates, 88, will be conducted on Friday, March 22, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bates passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at White Oak Manor. Born in Newberry County, she was the daughter of the late James Glasgow and the late Leona Hendrix Glasgow. She was a member of Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Church where she was a former member of the senior choir and No. 8 Class Leader. She was also a member of Women’s Home Aid Society No. 14.
Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Scretchen of Elmwood, Ga.; Brenda B. Jones (David) of Prosperity; two sons, Claude E. Bates of Newberry; Sylvester Bates of Leesville; two sisters, Vera Young and Justine Moon both of Newberry; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Rikard of Newberry; brother-in-law, J. P. Toland of Prosperity; other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends at 2410 Johnstone Street, Newberry, SC.

Barry Wilson
COLUMBIA — Funeral services for Mr. Barry Wilson, 61, will be conducted on Friday, March 22, 2013, at 11 a.m. at First Nazareth Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Viewing will be on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Pratt Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Wilson passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2013, at W. J. Brian Dorn VA Medical Center. Born in Newberry County, he was the son of Horace Wilson and Rachel Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a member of Belmont Baptist Church; a veteran of the U.S. Marines Corp, served two tours of duty in Vietnam, a Lifetime member of the VFW, Bronze Star Recipient for the United States Marines Corp. and a semi-pro basketball coach.
He was graduate of Newberry High School where he played basketball and made a basket from half court and won the game; he also played baseball and football; was awarded “Most Dramatic Performer” in a play; played the horn and loved to dance and sing. Mr. Wilson received a Bachelors of Arts degree and was a former employee with the VA Hospital.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Wilson; mother, Rachel Wilson; father, Horace Wilson; daughter, Zuri Wilson (fiance’, Nathaniel Seymore; sons, Marcus Wilson and Tarik Wilson; sisters, Bettyann Frazier and Kathleen Wilson all of Columbia; brother, Larry Wilson of Nashville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, five brothers-in-law, other relatives and friends.
