Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Jeremy Nichols on the recent birth of their son. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Danny W. Nichols of Whitmire.

Congratulations to Dawn and David Lisk on their recent birth of their son “Tripp” Uncle Clif, Auntie BJ and grandmother Roya Nell Smith are all excited and posting pics on Facebook.

On a sad note, we send our best wishes and sympathies to the families of former Whitmire resident Mrs. Louise Dean Ellis.

In upcoming community events and people in the news:

Several Town of Whitmire employees were recognized by Mayor Billy Hollingsworth and Town Council members at Whitmire’s Town Council meeting on March 11. Hollingsworth thanked all of the employees for their years of service to the town and presented them with a certificate.

Those employees included: Public Works Clerk Beth Broome, who also served as interim recreation director; Police Chief Jeremiah Sinclair, 10 years; WPD Officer Micheal Moss, seven years; Jimmy Brock, eight years with Water Treatment Plant, Claude “Fat Baby” Worthy, over 20 years of service in street maintenance.

The South Carolina Future Minds Facebook Page has information concerning voting deadlines on the BB&T This School’s Got Talent Show. Several WCS students, along with students all over South Carolina have submitted You Tube video clips of their singing and musical talents. The winner will get to perform at the Teacher of The Year Celebration and the BMW Golf Tournament in Hilton Head. This event, once known as “The Masters after the Masters Golf Tournament” is sponsored by the members of Hootie and the Blowfish. Two of the groups members will also be reviewing the video clips and judging the contestants. The Whitmire Jaycees Annual Community Easter Egg will be Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m . The hunt will be at Heritage Park in the old Park Street School location. The Jaycees will have refreshments ready under the picnic shelter. The hunt will have various age groups, with a prize egg in each group hunt. Parents and volunteers are welcome.

The Jaycees second annual Golf in the Pines Tournament is April 20 at The Whitmire Golf Course, located on 168 Golf Alley near Wolverine Stadium.

The tee time is 9 a.m., captains choice. Concessions will be sold. The Jaycees can be contacted on their Facebook page, entry forms available. Sims Chapel Baptist Church will host their Holy Week Services Monday through Wednesday March 25-27 at 7 p.m. Guest speakers are each night. The church members, choirs and pastor will also celebrate their Easter Resurrection Sunday Morning service March 31 at 9 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend.

The Whitmire Ministerial Association usually host the annual Good Friday Cross Walk at noon. In the past six years of the event members of the community, pastors and individuals meet at the Whitmire Presbyterian Church for the first prayer stop. A member of the group carried the cross to prayer stops various churches in Whitmire. All ages participated and a van was driven for those who couldn’t walk the entire route. Alright readers, Garabund the Deadline Fairy is here and is “green as a gourd” as my mother used to say. He had a big time on St. Patty’s Day, got stranded in Savannah, with broken wings and eye dust after a fun day in Columbia’s Five Points.
