WHITMIRE — Whitmire Community science students got a hands on experiment dealing with genetics on Feb. 26.
The Greenwood Genetic Center brought its Gene Machine Mobile Science Laboratory to Whitmire Community School. Participants included science students from Barrett Justice and Dr. Barry Morris’ classrooms. With the latest technology and the expertise of the Gene Machine instructors, these students were guided through a “mystery seafood murder scenario.”
The students learned new and thought-provoking facts about genetic traits and DNA fingerprinting. They also gained firsthand experience in using real life lab techniques found in forensics, and the instructors discussed how important it is to pay attention to the proper procedures used in a forensic laboratory.
This unique opportunity afforded the students a fun, yet educational, experience which peaked their interest in genetics and forensics and was enjoyed by all. The students of Whitmire Community eagerly anticipate the return of the Gene Machine next year.
