NEWBERRY — The Newberry City Council paid homage to the Newberry High basketball team with a reception and resolution on Tuesday night.

The team was honored for winning the Class AA Upper State Basketball Championship with a 76-70 victory over Keenan High.

The ‘Dogs then advanced to the Class AA State Championship game in Columbia where they lost a close game to Lake Marion.

“It was an exciting, fast paced game, with numerous lead changes and a total of 173 points scored,” said Newberry Mayor Foster Senn. “Ultimately, the Bulldogs came within nine points of Newberry’s first state basketball championship.”

Senn added the high school team also played before 17,000 onlookers.

The high school team won its second Upper State Championship and went 51-7 over the past two seasons and finished the 2013 season with a 26-3 record.

“Coach Chad Cary’s young men played a high energy, up tempo, exciting brand of basketball,” added Senn. “They played with heart; they played as a team; and, like all champions, they had great chemistry. They also won with class and displayed good sportsmanship.”

A framed copy of the resolution was presented to the team by the City Council.
