NEWBERRY — A resolution was signed by City Council on Tuesday proclaiming April 3 as National Walking Day in the City of Newberry.

The National Walking Day is an imitative of the American Heart Association aimed at calling attention the impact of longer working hours and lengthy periods of inactivity for adults across America.

Due to inactivity along doubling the risk of heart disease, the American Heart Association is promoting walking during the work day on April 3.

National Walking Day will be celebrated in Newberry between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in Memorial Park. The walk will be on Main Street.

Serving as the special guest at the event will be Amanda Bluestein, a graduate of Newberry College, Miss South Carolina 2004, and a heart survivor.

Also her parents will be there. Bluestein’s dad, Greg, was a Newberry College football player and he currently serves on the Newberry College Alumni Association Board of Managers.

City workers will set up tables and chairs on the square for the walkers to eat lunch.

Erin Whitaker of Whitaker Funeral Home is heading up the event and can be contacted at 276-5000.
