NEWBERRY — The Newberry Wolves scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a tie and earn a 7-5 win over the Limestone Saints at the Smith Road Complex on Wednesday.
Newberry moves to 13-8 on the year, while Limestone falls to 12-6. Both teams were tied for ninth in the latest Southeast Region rankings by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association. Newberry hosts Tusculum for a three-game South Atlantic Conference series on Friday and Saturday.
Limestone took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Chad Balderman two-run homerun to left field.
Newberry batted around in the fourth and scored three runs on an RBI single by Albert Baur, a sacrifice fly from Brandan Sheridan and an RBI single from Nolan Schrenker.
The Wolves extended the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth on RBIs from Chas Goodwin and Jermale Paige.
Limestone plated a pair on an error and a sacrifice fly in the seventh and tied it up with and RBI double from Michael Kelly in the eighth.
Newberry had two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth and a fielding error by the left fielder brought a pair of runs home to give the scarlet and gray a 7-5 lead.
Limestone had two runners in scoring position and the winning run at the plate with two outs in the top of the ninth before Tyler Sturkie induced a groundout to earn his first save of the season.
Matt Chapman moved to 1-1 on the year with 0.2 innings of scoreless relief in the eighth.
Starter Brandon Ahrens of Newberry High earned no decision despite allowing just the two runs in six innings of work, striking out five.
Goodwin was 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored, while Chapin’s Alex Kirby and Paige each earned two hits.
