HILTON HEAD ISLAND — The Newberry men’s tennis knocked off the Findlay Oilers 5-4 at the Van der Meer Tennis Center on Monday in the Wolves’ opening match of Spring TennisFest.
Newberry (4-4) struggled in doubles action against Findlay (3-3) dropping points at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Wolves clinched their lone doubles point at No. 1 doubles where juniors Michael Saunders and Vinicius Botelho earned an 8-4 win over John Kidd and Dawid Hebda.
Singles action saw the Wolves edge out the Oilers 4-2, first with a straight sets victory by Saunders at No. 1. At No. 2 Botelho won comfortably 6-1, 6-1 over Yannick Mohring.
The Wolves deciding points came at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, where sophomore Fernando Espana earned a two-set win over Dawid Hebda. At No. 5 singles junior Jeffery Kiser, of Newberry, battled in three sets to defeat Matt Smith.
Newberry matches up with Ashford on Wednesday to continue its run at Spring TennisFest.
