NEWBERRY — Since James Earl Hill was about 13 years old, he’s wanted to be on Price of Right he exclaims as he stands by his UPS truck outside the Newberry Observer office.

“I’ve watched the show since I was 13 years old and for about 40 years I’ve wanted to be on that show,” said Hill, a UPS driver for Newberry.

Now his opportunity may come as his daughter, Nakesha Jones, is flying him out to California for his 53rd birthday and a chance to interview and “come on down,” as the famous slogan from the bellowing announcer.

Jones and her husband live in California, said Hill so this is a chance to see his daughter and an opportunity for a dream to come true.

When it comes down to the interviewing process, Hill said he’s been working on his enthusiasm so that he gets picked. He said they’ll ask him questions about where he’s from and other basic questions.

The enthusiasm and smiles radiates from Hill who is beaming as he gets ready to fly out to California.

Hill will interview for the CBS show on his birthday - March 6 - and the show he hopes to appear on will air March 13.

To help showcase his excitement, Hill also had a T-shirt made courtesy of Foster Senn that says ‘South Carolina (loves) Drew Carey.’ Carey is the host of the show and took over after long-time host Bob Barker retired.

Hill said he hasn’t been out to California since he was in the U.S. Army and this time he’ll be flying out for fun. Hill was a platoon leader with the Army.

The trip was supposed to be a surprise but that was foiled.

“She tried to surprise me but she let the cat out of the bag,” said Hill.

After Hill visits his daughter, he’s going to Las Vegas, Nev. with his son-in-law making his 53rd birthday one to remember.
