NEWBERRY — A female Newberry College student was struck over the weekend by a vehicle while she was in a crosswalk on Evans Street.

A 20-year-old college freshman and a friend were walking across Evans Street near Luther Street when the saw a car traveling towards College Street.

The one student was able to jump out of the path of the car but the 20-year-old athlete was hit by the left side of the car as she tried to get out of the way, said Newberry Police Sgt. Chuck Rogers.

The collision threw the coed about 20 feet, according to police reports.

The student, who is on the volleyball team. suffered a broken leg.

“The student received immediate medical attention and was transported to Newberry Hospital. The student received medical treatment at Newberry Hospital and was transferred to Palmetto Richland for further treatment with non-life-threatening injuries,” said Newberry College Vice President for Institutional Advancement Scott Joyner.

The 30-year-old driver of the vehicle was given a ticket for failure to yield the right of way at a pedestrian crossing, said Rogers.

The car’s driver side mirror was damaged in the collision, he added.

“The college was in direct contact with the student at the hospital with several staff members including student affairs personnel, athletic training staff, and campus security. The parents were notified and were received by a Newberry College staff member at Palmetto Richland,” said Joyner.
