PROSPERITY — Elizabeth Mullins’ love of thrift stores intertwined when she opened up her thrift store on Valentine’s Day last week.
Mullins, whose middle name is Louise and goes by Weezie, opened up the thrift store of the same name - Weezie’s - in the Piggly-Wiggly shopping center heading into Prosperity.
“I’ve always wanted to do this,” said Mullins. “I’ve always loved thrift stores because I don’t like to pay a lot of money for clothes and stuff.”
Weezie’s is a thrift store with a boutique like feel. The wall is even painted hot pink and girlie decor trims the wall.
“I decorated it myself. I picked the color (pink) out because I’m pink and prissy,” said Mullins.
Mullins is originally from Hartwell, Ga. and moved to Newberry with her husband about a year ago.
“Before I moved here, I loved going to thrift stores,” she said. “There’s not much (thrift stores) around (Prosperity) so I thought I would open one.”
Weezie’s is filled with men’s, women’s and kids clothes and miscellaneous household items. There are also new clothes that Mullins finds or is given. However, no matter what, Mullins said she wants to keep things affordable.
She said that she wouldn’t pay a high price for something so she wouldn’t want others to do also.
She points out that with infants clothes, she only marks them for 50 cents because based on how fast babies grow, there’s no need to spend a lot of money on their clothes.
“I have four kids and two grand kids and I know they grow so fast,” she said.
Mullins said she has plenty of stuff and despite being opened less than a week, she’s already had people come in and donate. If she cannot use it or she gets too much, she’ll take it to another thrift store.
Mullins said that everyone who has come in has been so nice and she is enjoying the city. She likes small towns and thrift stores so her niche is found.
A couple of people that Mullins credits for helping her with her business are Nancy Williamson and Kathy Fuller.
She said that Fuller answered some tax questions and that Williamson has “helped me so much because I didn’t know what I was doing.”
Williamson is with the Small Business Development Center in Newberry and helped Mullins create a website and Facebook page.
