NEWBERRY — The City of Newberry Water Treatment Facility on the Saluda River will be getting an upgrade.
The work is currently in the development phase with engineering reports being done, but the plan is to install an additional water storage tank, rehabilitate the current plant and build an electric substation.
The city has set a $15 million budget for the project.
The $15 million budget “is a generously padded number to ensure that the actual cost of the project does not exceed the estimate,” Newberry City Manager Jeff Shacker said of the cost.
The city will pay cash for the engineering reports and the rest will be paid for through a bond or loan proceeds. The design work is estimated to be around $75,000.
Also a vote in March could allow the city to pay around $1 million for two transformers being used at the transfer station.
It will take 48 weeks from the time the transformers are ordered for them to be completed.
Shacker said the transformers are needed to build the capacity to meet future economic development demands on the city’s power system.
