LITTLE MOUNTAIN — Abby Berry, Charlotte Delk and Amelia Shealy from Little Mountain Elementary are proud to have the only math Olympiad team in Newberry County.

“I am very excited to have a math Olympiad team at LME,” Principal Kimberly Mack said. “Renee Joiner, our Olympiad coach, shares her passion for math and learning with the team, and I am delighted to witness the growth in our mathematicians. The math Olympiad team has been an asset to Little Mountain Elementary, and I am excited that we have already discussed the continuation of the program for next school year.”

Selected fourth-graders and fifth-graders were chosen for the team based on their academics in math. Team members meet once a week after school to go over problem solving and other math related problems. They also participate in competitions.

Berry, a fifth-grade math Olympiad participant said, “It is a fun and great experience.”

When asked her thoughts, team member Delk said, “I thought math Olympiad would be hard, but Mrs. Joiner (teacher) makes learning fun.”

The team provides a great opportunity for elementary students to learn and prepare for upper level mathematics. Math Olympiad students have sessions where they practice high level math and learn new ways to take their math skills to a higher level. Periodically the team will take a test with five timed questions, Renee Joiner will enter the answers on the computer, and Little Mountain Elementary’s team is ranked compared to other schools.

“The team loves Mrs. Joiner,” said Amelia Shealy.

The team’s goal is to follow the E3 motto: Energize, Excite and Enrich.
