NEWBERRY COUNTY — The low-flying jets that caused many Facebook posts and questions to law enforcement on Wednesday were military aircraft.

“I know the ones that came past Newberry High School were fighter aircraft,” Newberry Sheriff Lee Foster said. “However, one person described a larger aircraft, which could be a C-17 cargo aircraft out of Charleston. However the ones I saw were fighters.”

Sightings were reported from Newberry to Bush River to Silverstreet to Prosperity to Lake Murray. The sheriff’s office confirmed the planes were military.

“But that is all they will tell us,” Foster said around 9 p.m. Wednesday. “I am sure it is fine and they are practicing to protect our freedoms. We are blessed in the Midlands to have two of the best and efficient fighter squadrons in the world at Shaw and McEntire.”

Foster added the aircraft were likely just doing routine training.

A helicopter also has been working the area to cut way limbs from power lines. The aircraft has a rope and what looks like a ball on the end that works as a saw to cut tree branches away from power lines.
