PROSPERITY — Jessica Franklin is only 10 years old but she’s already donated more than 20 inches of her hair to Locks of Love.

The Little Mountain Elementary student donated 11 inches on Jan. 22 at The Edge salon in Irmo. The first time was when Franklin was 7 and she and her family were on vacation in Boston, Mass.

“I felt really good the first time I did it and I wanted to help again,” said Franklin, who said her hair stylist, Heidi Dale, comforted her and did a good job.

Even though Franklin described her initial feelings as reluctant, she was glad she could donate to the non-profit organization based out of Florida that takes clean hair and makes wigs for children who have cancer, alopecia or other medical conditions in which they lose their hair.

“I wanted it back at first,” Franklin said about her second experience in which her long, blonde hair was cut, “but then I just felt really good. The next day, I was over it and mailed it off.”

Franklin went with her mother, Stephanie Franklin, and a friend to the post office to ship the hair to Florida. Franklin said her friend has also had her hair cut once for Locks of Love.

After she had her hair cut the second time, Franklin said she didn’t tell anybody. Instead she showed up at school with her new, short bob.

“I just showed up to school and everyone crowded around me and asked questions,” she said. She also said she received compliments from people about how pretty her new style was.

As for new new style, Franklin and her mother say it’s much easier to maintain. When asked if she would grow out and cut her hair a third time, she said “yes,” shaking her head up and down.
