LAKELAND, Fla. — The Newberry College men’s golf team finished the 32nd annual Matlock Collegiate Classic at the Lone Palm Golf Course on Tuesday in 14th place with a three-round total of 49-over par 913 (302-305-306).
Chandler Gruenemeier shot even par Tuesday to finish in a tie for 25th with a 5-over par 221. Jon Weiss tied for 51st with a three-round total of 11-over par 227 after shooting a 75 in the final round.
Dixon Walker shot a 78 Tuesday and finished in a tie for 53rd with a 12-over par 228, Tommy Hurst finished in 71st with a 22-over par 238 and Layton Truax finished in 75th with a 35-over par 251.
Barry University won the tournament with a Classic record 838 (-26), besting a record set by LSU (-24) in 1989. Florida Southern’s Tim Crouch set the tournament individual record at 16-under, besting a record set by FSC’s Jeff Klauk (-12) in 2001.
The Wolves return to the links on March 18 and March 19 at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate. That tournament will be held at the Sevierville Golf Course in Sevierville, Tenn., which is also the sit of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships to be held in April.
