NEWBERRY — Newberry County had a record breaking United Way of the Midlands campaign for 2012, according to Mac Bennett, president/CEO of United Way of the Midlands.

Newberry County organizations were recognized Tuesday morning at the Newberry County Chamber of Commerce legislative breakfast.

The county went over its goal of $265,000 and contributed $317,761, which was 120 percent of their goal.

Ten organizations were recognized for their contributions. The campaign all-stars were:

• Pioneer Frozen Foods, silver award, $41,000 contribution

• Newberry Electric Cooperative, bronze award, $3,059 contribution

• Kraft Foods Group Inc., bronze and chairman awards, $22,871 contribution. Kraft increased their contribution by 50,000 over last year

• West Fraser Timber, merit award, over $4,000 contribution. West Fraser Timber increased their contribution over 100 percent.

• Caterpillar, merit award, $36,074 contribution

• Stokes-Trainor, premier (new) award, $2,600

• Newberry College, premier (new) award, $730

• Gallman Elementary, premier (new) award, $350

• Newberry Middle, premier (new) award, $887

• Newberry High, premier (new) award, $850

Campaign awards recognize the companies or organizations for their work in the campaign.

The 2012 campaign team for Newberry County was made of eight individuals around the county. They are: Co-Chair Glenda O’Brien of Kraft Foods, Co-Chair Ron Vigus of Newberry County Memorial Hospital, Stokes-Trainor Joe Trainor, Newberry County School District’s Pam Arrington, West Fraser’s Melody Harrison, Caterpillar’s Terrah Linden, Komatsu’s Greg Martin and Newberry County Chamber’s Ted Smith.

United Way aid

Eleven agencies benefited by United Way through the Impact fund.

In Newberry County, the following agencies helped serve those in the county: Alston Wilkes, American Red Cross, Boys and Girls Club, Eau Claire Cooperative Health Centers, Family Connection of South Carolina, Columbia Free Medical Clinic, Inc., Harvest Hope, Newberry County Council on Aging, Newberry Free Medical Clinic, Newberry Literacy Council and Sistercare.

More than 1,000 people were served through these agencies because of United Way.
