GREENWOOD – The Newberry men’s tennis team fell 8-1 in the spring opener against No. 8 Lander University at Cabri Courts on Friday afternoon.

The lone bright spot came during No. 1 doubles play where the first team preseason All-SAC doubles pair of Vinicius Botelho and Michael Saunders earned an upset victory.

Newberry (0-2) fell in a pair of doubles matches 8-2, before Saunders and Botelho upset the No. 21 doubles team in the country with a 9-7 back and forth victory over August Iwdal and Adam Jonsson. The Lander (1-0) pairing is also ranked No. 6 in the region.

Lander controlled singles action from the top of the lineup down to the bottom, as only Newberry junior David Sons managed to win a set against his opponent. Sons fell in three sets at No. 6 singles.

The Wolves return to the road on Feb. 10 for a trip to Belmont, N.C., to take on the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey.
