NEWBERRY — The Newberry Wolves opened their new facility at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday with a sweep of the Lees-McRae Bobcats, highlighted by a no-hitter from Newberry’s Kaylyn Camacho. The Wolves won the first softball game 9-1 in five innings, then earned their second victory of the day by a 7-1 score.

The Wolves will take a perfect 2-0 record into the first full week of the 2013 season. Newberry will host two doubleheaders in the next week, welcoming nonconference foes Francis Marion and Limestone to the Smith Road Complex for two games each on Wednesday and Saturday. Both doubleheaders will begin at 1 p.m.

Game One: Newberry 9, Lees-McRae 1

Camacho ensured that the first game played at the Smith Road Complex would be an unforgettable one, tallying a no-hitter in which she allowed only four baserunners. After hitting a batter on the first pitch of the game, Camacho sat down the next 12 Bobcats she faced.

The Bobcats’ only run came in the fifth inning after a walk and a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt. Camacho recorded four strikeouts in her five innings of work.

Camacho’s effort was reminiscent of Shelley Jeffcoat’s Opening Day start against Southern Wesleyan in 2012, in which Jeffcoat took a perfect game into the seventh inning and finished with a complete-game one-hitter.

The Wolves scored in every inning of the shortened contest, using an RBI double from Leah Hosting to score a first-inning run and a Bobcats error to plate two more in the second inning.

The biggest offensive play came in the Wolves’ three-run fourth inning, as Casey Stevens tripled to right field to score two runs. An RBI single by Brittany Phillips in the fifth inning gave the Wolves an eight-run lead, securing the victory per NCAA rules.

Game Two: Newberry 7, Lees-McRae 1

After falling behind early, the Wolves came from behind to sweep Saturday’s doubleheader.

Danielle Basch provided the game’s offensive highlight, smacking a two-RBI triple to right field that helped the Wolves take a lead they would not give up.

Jeffcoat retired the first two batters she faced until Bobcats’ second baseman Alison Armstrong worked the count full, before hitting a home run over the fence in right-center field to give Lees-McRae an early 1-0 lead.

Newberry battled back in the second inning, using a Yancey single, a sacrifice bunt, an RBI single, and a two-RBI triple from Basch to build a 3-1 advantage.

The Wolves again struck for three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Darrian Jamison, then tacked on one final run in the seventh via a Gwenell Crawford single.
