SILVERSTREET — A collision with a fire hydrant left the Silverstreet area without water on Friday.

A pick-up truck ran the stop sign at Trinity Church and Silverstreet roads between 11 p.m. and midnight Thursday and went off the end of the road.

As the driver was pulling back on the road, he hit the back side of a fire hydrant, according to Tony Keller, spokesman for the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Brent Richardson, general manager of Newberry County Water and Sewer, said workers noticed between 11:30 p.m. and midnight Thursday on their monitors that the system was losing water and started searching for the leak.

“We lost a pile of water,” said Richardson. The exact amount of water has not been determined.

Water crews worked from midnight Thursday until around 5 a.m. Friday before they discovered where the system was leaking water.

Richardson said if the fire hydrant had been hit from the front, a break off mechanism would have broken, making for an easy repair. But the break was on the main line because it was hit from behind.

Water was restored to customers Friday just after noon on Friday.

Troopers found the truck Friday afternoon at a home near the accident site. The driver, who was from Silverstreet, was given tickets for leaving the scene of a wreck and driving too fast for conditions.
