NEWBERRY — Ancient African artifacts, presentations on African history and accomplishments of prominent Blacks from America’s past and present are all included in a traveling African-American history museum at Newberry College.
“Sankofa African-American Museum on Wheels” rolls into Newberry College’s Wessels Library 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
Sankofa is an African word as declared by King Adinkera of the Akan tribe and it means “go back and get/take.”
Angela Jennings is the curator of the museum and began this because of the lack of African history she learned in school. Jennings is also a history connoisseur and has traveled around the world including West Africa.
The museum begins in 1860 and continues to modern times. It is broken into six parts..
The exhibit begins in slavery exploring the Emancipation of Proclamation and the King Cotton Museum and moves into the Ida B. Wells lynching and the Negro Baseball League among other things.
Jennings also discusses the celebrations of Blacks such as Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights movement.
There will be plenty of books and artifacts and people can also learn about Kwanzaa, the African celebration in December.
Jennings motto is, “We must go back to reclaim all that has been stolen, lost, hidden and ultimately, forgotten in order to preserve and rebuild our present and our future.”
