NEWBERRY COUNTY — Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster is warning residents about a scam involving federal grants.

Males and females are calling phones using the number 233-333-3333 with thick accents, possibly Caribbean, said Foster. Foster said the caller states they are from the federal government in Washington, D.C. and are offering grants in varying amounts.

They often bait the caller by saying they are getting a tax refund.

Then they want personal information and a Visa number.

If allowed to go further in the conversation, the impostors will also request that the person send in money.

“This is a scam,” said Foster. “Do not give any personal information out. It is very easy for a scammer to get phone numbers. The best way to handle these callers is to hang up.”
