NHS girls defeat Rebels

PROSPERITY — For the first time in two years, the Newberry High Lady Bulldogs are on a three-game regional winning streak as they defeated Mid-Carolina in Prosperity 58-46 Friday evening.

The Lady Rebels led after both of the first two quarters, 13-12 and 26-17, but Newberry went on a 21-11 third quarter run to take the lead for good heading into the fourth quarter.

Newberry made all 24 of their field shots from inside the three-point arc while the Lady Rebels made three of their 19 field shots from behind the arc.

Neither team went to the charity stripe the entire first quarter but the Lady Bulldogs made 10 of their 16 free-throws while Mid-Carolina went five-of-11 from the charity stripe.

Tyshira Bates had a game-high 21 points for Newberry, including coming within a lone point of tying the entire Mid-Carolina team for points in the final quarter.

Arnasia Boyd scored 14 points on the evening as she went an evening high six-for-seven from the free-throw line, which all came in the second half.

Fatima Sims scored seven points while Octavia Grandy scored six.

Shidedria Maybin scored four points while Breanna Mathis, Nala Moon and Ericka Jones each scored two points as Newberry is now 7-8 on the season and is in a tie with Abbeville for first place in the region with a 4-1 record.

Not a single Lady Rebel scored in double digits, but Alix Green scored nine points while both Jalesa Ruff and Janesshia Boyd scored seven points.

Julie Kinard and Carli Ruff scored six points apiece while Alexis Fowler scored five.

Whitney McConnell scored four points while the Lady Rebel scoring ended with the two points of Kelsey Bailey.

Mid-Carolina drops to 6-6 on the season and is tied with Ninety Six in the region with a 3-2 record for second place.
