Lady ‘Dogs get a win

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE — The Newberry High Lady Bulldogs handed the Batesburg-Leesville Lady Panthers their seventh straight loss, including fourth straight in the region, as they never trailed in their 39-35 victory Tuesday night in the Panthers’ gym.

Tyshira Bates ended each of the first two quarters at the buzzer with a basket as Newberry took an 18-13 lead into the locker room.

Newberry still led by five after three quarters of play, 27-22.

The Lady Panthers converted 10-of-21 free-throws while Newberry made seven-of-16 from the charity stripe.

Newberry had a 15-12 advantage in field shots.

Arnasia Boyd had 12 points as she and Octavia Grandy, who finished with nine, scored in each of the four quarters for Newberry.

Bates finished with eight points in the first half while both Fatima Sims and Shidedira Maybin scored four points apiece.

Breanna Mathis scored two points.

Newberry is now 6-8 on the season and is tied with Mid-Carolina, whom they visit this Friday, for second place in the region with a 3-1 record.
