NEWBERRY — Mary Claire Workman Shannon, 92, formerly of Highway 121, Newberry died on Jan. 7, 2013. She was the wife of the late Samuel Pope Shannon.

Born Jan. 16, 1920, in Newberry County, she was the daughter of Margaret Young Workman and Pinckney Claire Workman. Mrs. Shannon graduated from Bush River High School and received a certificate in bookkeeping in 1939 from Newberry College. She worked as a bookkeeper for H. M. Hentz and Son for over 30 years. She was a longtime active member of Central United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities. She was chair of the Council on Ministries in the 1980s and served as both president and treasurer of the United Methodist Women. She was the district treasurer for Greenwood U.M.W. Executive Committee for four years. Mary Claire was a very devoted member of the Ezell Bible Class and New Ventures.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Shannon of Mount Pleasant and her grandson, Andrew Shannon Clawson of Charleston. She is survived by six siblings, Edna Hunter Workman Ringer, Jean Fuller Workman Epting (Mac), Thomas William Workman (Edith), John Pinckney Workman (Eleanor), Ned Rutledge Workman (Liz), Dorothy Ann Workman Penn (Earl) and many nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by one brother, Richard Young Workman, and two sisters, Margaret Louise Workman Lyles and Martha Elizabeth Workman Arant.

Funeral Services will be conducted at Central United Methodist Church on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at 2 p.m. by The Rev. Tresco Shannon assisted by Rev. Dennis Lee and Rev. John Miller The family will receive friends following the service in Henry Hall. Internment will follow at Newberry Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers are her nephews, James Neal Shannon Jr., Richard Carroll Workman, Samuel Clair Lyles, Dan Workman Epting, Timothy Warren Epting, Robert Workman Ringer, Thomas William Workman Jr., John Charles Ringer, John Pinckney Workman Jr., Ned Rutledge Workman Jr. and Michael Earl Penn.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Ezell Bible Class and the New Ventures.

The family suggests memorials be made to Central United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 67, Newberry, South Carolina or the charity of one’s choice.
