Newberry Academy celebrated homecoming this past weekend, and Marie Ramsey was crowned homecoming queen.
The large home crowd, filled with returning graduates, watched the current athletes battle King Academy on Friday night, and on Saturday many former athletes competed in the Alumni Basketball Games.
The alumni games brought together nearly 30 former basketball players that competed in spirited and entertaining games.
Children of alumni also competed in a game.
On Friday, the alumni were treated with a near sweep of King Academy, as three out of four current Newberry Academy teams defeated King.
The middle school girls got things started with a hard fought 18–12 win. Amber Suber led her team with six points.
The boys’ middle school team, powered by 32 points from Landen York, beat King 41–24.
The varsity girls lost a close game, 32–25, and the varsity boys finished the night in style, winning 76–36.
For the varsity girls, the teams traded baskets in the early part of the game.
The Lady Eagles found themselves down by only two after the first period, and with just over five minutes left in the first half, the visitors held a slight, 14–9, lead.
Newberry was down to 18–12 at the half, and struggled to make any headway in the second half.
King never really pulled away, but the Lady Eagles could never close the gap. King held a slight four point advantage with two minutes to go in the third period, but never relinquished the lead.
Andie Getz led Newberry with 13 points, followed by Emily Senn with six points. Emma Lindsay had three points on the night, and Carman Franklin and Kaitlyn Nobles added two points and a point respectively.
The Lady Eagles overall record stands at 4-9, and they are 4–1 in the region.
The varsity boys’ team steamrolled King, overcoming a slow start and winning by 40.
After struggling in the early first period, the Eagles fed the ball to Dylan Skipper inside.
He responded with 10 first quarter points, as the home team began to pull away.
Newberry held a slight 12–5 lead after one period, but their offense began to click in the second period.
The Eagles scored 23 points in the second quarter, with points contributed by seven different players.
The second half was no kinder to King, and despite heavy substitutions by the home team, the Eagles continued to pull away. Every active player scored for Newberry, led by Jacob Epting with 14 points.
Skipper and Jake Buzhardt finished with 12 points each. Josh Sawyer and Justin Suber each added eight points.
CJ Connelly and Alex Cole had six points each. Other players to score included Ryan Smith with four points, and Tyler French, Sean Blanton, and Luke Carraway with two points each.
The Eagles stand at 8–6 overall, and 4–1 in the region.
Newberry Academy is in action again Tuesday when they travel to Anderson Christian, and on Friday when they face Laurens at home.
